British housebuilding rises by highest level in eight years

The number of new houses built has risen by 11% according to figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

This represents the third consecutive year-on-year increase and the highest annual total since 2007/08.

In total, 893,000 additional homes have been delivered since 2010 – 189,650 in the past year.

Of those homes, 163,940 were new builds, 30,600 were from change of use between non-domestic and residential, 4,760 from conversions between houses and flats and 780 were other dwellings.

This news follows housing minister Gavin Barwell’s announcement that a new £18m fund has been created to speed up housebuilding on large development sites.

Regarding the latest figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government, Mr Barwell said: “We promised to turbocharge housebuilding so more people can have the security of their own home, and that is exactly what we are doing with the biggest increase in the number of new homes in many years.

“We know there is more to do to ensure the housing market works for everyone and not just the privileged few and we will be setting out further details in our housing white paper shortly.”
