FCA exposes unauthorised construction law firm

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued a warning over a law firm which it believes is carrying on regulated activities without authorisation.

US-based Colbert & Welling LLP claims on its website that it offers construction litigation services as well as stating that it practices in real estate and land use litigation.

Its website states that it deals with claims of deficient or unsatisfactory residential work and has extensive experience advocating for its clients on difficult construction contract disputes in court.

However, the FCA believes Colbert & Welling has been targeting people in the UK and carrying out regulated activities in the UK which require authorisation.

“We strongly advise you to only deal with financial firms that are authorised by us, and check the Financial Services Register to ensure they are,” said the FCA.

“You should also be aware that if you give money to an unauthorised firm, you will not be covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme if things go wrong.”
