L&G launches social value charter

Legal & General (L&G) has launched a 250-acre development site in Berkshire in which it will look to gauge how much social value it can create for the local community.

The scheme at Buckler’s Park in Crowthorne is set to create new homes, a primary school, a care home, a community facility, 130 acres of public open space and a nature reserve, which will be open to the public.

L&G has created a social value charter – which it claimed was the first of its kind in the UK – to help monitor and communicate how much value its developments produce to the benefit of the local community, ensuring that a resilient, first-rate and sustainable community is created.

The social value charter has allowed L&G to narrow down the challenges and opportunities that might be faced by the community in Crowthorne, while showing how L&G’s activities could help.

The development at Buckler’s Park will offer a new community of quality, contemporary-styled one-, two-, three-, four- and five-bedroom homes.

The first phase will initially bring 207 new homes to Crowthorne, which will be released to the public later this year.

“We want to shake up how we look at housebuilding,” said James Lidgate, CEO of L&G Homes (pictured above).

“It is much more than just building homes.

“It is looking at how we regenerate the UK landscape for the better and building healthy communities.

“We have started to look at how our housing developments can support the local economy and community around an asset over the long term.

“This is exactly what we are doing in Crowthorne, where we are creating a socially useful development that will contribute to the local economy and create the best possible environment for our residents.”
