Church and pub demolition to pave the way for 57 new homes

The demolition of a church and a pub is set to pave the way for 57 new homes on two brownfield sites in Brighton & Hove.

The city council’s planning committee has approved the demolition of the Downsman pub in Hangleton Way, with permission granted for 33 homes on the site comprising 10 terraced houses and a block of 23 flats.

Thirteen of the homes will be affordable properties.

The development of a community space has also been included in the plans to offset the loss of the pub, which was listed as an asset of community value.

The planning committee has also granted permission for the demolition of a former Baptist church in Montpelier Place which will be replaced with 24 homes.

Planning permission has been granted for the construction of five four-storey houses, a five-storey block of 14 flats and a three-storey block containing five flats.

Five of the homes to be built on the site will be affordable units.

Cllr Julie Cattell, the planning committee chair, said: “We desperately need homes.

“The city council is approving many schemes, improving them in discussion with developers and doing all we can to meet our 40% affordable target each time.”
