Timber frame sales expected to 'rise rapidly' in 2022

Timber frame housebuilding is expected to see a £70m increase this year, according to the latest study from MTW Research.

The report, based on data from 80% of the timber frame market, found that sales are set to rise rapidly in 2022 following growing demand for both residential and commercial timber frame buildings.

The research forecasts that the timber frame sector will increase by over £150m by 2026, and identifies a wide range of positive factors and opportunities for growth for timber frame suppliers.

The positive environmental credentials of timber homes — such as carbon capture, faster build times, and reduced on-site costs, waste and labour — are also highlighted by MTW as a key growth opportunity for the sector this year.

Regionally, the North West and East remain popular areas for timber frame construction, with the South East and West Midlands growing market share.

Scotland continues to lead the way in timber frame housebuilding, though Wales, England and Northern Ireland have all experienced volume growth.

In terms of dwelling type, detached houses currently account for almost one-third of timber frame building activity — however, semi-detached homes continue to gain share of the market.

Mark Waddy, director at MTW Research, said: “[There’s] a real possibility of a £1bn timber frame market in future, with merger and acquisitions more prevalent across the timber frame industry as acquisitive growth increasingly becomes a prerequisite to increase profitability and fulfil customer needs.”
