To be honest, I think that we have a long way to go to reach that goal, but then we are talking about global equality and, as we know, there are many countries in the world for which equality is an alien concept.
However, in my world of financial services and insurance, things have been changing in recent years. Since the launch of the Women in Finance Charter, more companies are taking diversity and equality more seriously, and there appears to be more opportunities for women across our sectors, which is promising.
- 'Lean on your colleagues and mentors to help you challenge yourself'
- 'Women offer an alternative or, perhaps, additional perspective on building projects'
- 'I would love to see the day when we have a more equal ratio of women building on sites'
Still, the main aim for our industry is not only to attract more women, but to achieve greater parity at board and senior management levels. It was great to see the number of women making strides in various managerial and director roles in the 2022 B&C Magazine Power List, but the percentage was still perhaps indicative of the workforce as a whole.
Nonetheless, there are more women in our industry than ever before, and that in itself is something to be celebrated. We may be a long way off gender equality, but we continue to move in the right direction.
On a personal level, I am pleased to now be a part of a small, but growing, team where I’m truly valued for my experience, professionalism and determination.
For anyone thinking of making the move into financial services and insurance, there are so many facets to the industry and there are opportunities for everyone. You will get the chance to learn new skills and the sky really is the limit — if you just take the first step.
