A consultation is currently open on the Welsh government’s plans which would require EV charge points in all new residential and non-residential buildings, as well as properties undergoing major renovations.
This is in line with the Welsh government’s goal to become a net zero economy by 2050. Similar regulations are already in place in England.
While Propertymark overall welcomes the environmental motivation of this step, the trade group has flagged concerns around costs in its written response to the Welsh government.

Propertymark specifically wants authorities to refrain from what it sees as a “one-size-fits-all” approach, with the risk of this added financial pressure making some developments unviable.
In its official response, Propertymark wrote: “The concern is that this could put undue cost on developers, particularly small developers.
“There is a high demand for new housing in Wales and this additional cost could make some developments unviable.”
As an alternative, Propertymark is suggesting the installation of cable routes in these properties which it argues would enable quick installation of chargepoints in future.
The group added: “[this] is a more cost effective and less invasive approach which Propertymark supports.”
