Lincoln City has launched a funding project for an ambitious plan to turn its stadium into a lasting tribute to WW2 heroes.

Supporters have so far raised over £40,000 in an attempt to create a unique mosaic on one of the stands of their Sincil Bank home.

The planned mosaic will include images of the famed Lancaster Bombers-which were built in Lincoln-and of the town’s historic Cathedral.

It is hoped that the project will last as a fitting tribute to both the famous air strikes which helped crush German resistance during WW2 and to the town’s links with the RAF.

The group has set a target of raising £380,000 of which £150,000 will go towards creating the tribute.

The mosaic will be made up of 5681 individual pieces and each piece can be sponsored for as little as £40 by fans.

Fans who purchase more expensive parts of the mosaic, priced at £250, will guarantee themselves ownership of a piece of the historic design.

The inspiration for the image stemmed from painting by Simon Atack, who is involved with the design’s planning.

The painting is largely considered by experts to be one of the most accurate depictions of a Lancaster Bomber in full flight.
