Glasgow City Football Club has entered a formal agreement with East Dunbartonshire Council to explore the development of the UK’s first purpose-built women’s football stadium.
The development will also consist of a joint sport and community wellbeing facility in Auchinairn, East Dunbartonshire which will advance the city’s aims to increase public participation in sport and learning.
Rhondda Geekie, East Dunbartonshire Council Leader, said the agreement was made on 25th June to explore the potential for a sporting facility alongside other community facilities.
“Through both the information session we held in May and the online survey we hosted on the Council website there was overwhelming support for the development of this proposal from those who took part,” said Rhondda.
“Agreeing to this Memorandum of Understanding cements the commitment of both the Council and the Foundation to further develop the proposal.”
Douglas Barnet, Chairman of Glasgow City Foundation, welcomed the agreement to progress with the potential development and expressed his delight to be working with the council on such a project.
"Potentially this will be the first purpose-built women's football facility in the UK - promoting the sport to new generations of girls and women,” said Douglas.
