Housing zones across the UK have received nearly £6.3m to kick-start work on thousands of new properties.

The funding will be distributed to councils in 19 out of the 20 flagship housing zones and is aimed at reviving brownfield sites to deliver homes for families and first-time buyers.

The news comes on the back of David Cameron’s announcement of a £1.2bn Starter Home Fund which is set to create 30,000 new homes.

“Housing zones offer enormous potential to use brownfield land for new homes which is why this government is determined to get them built out as soon as possible,” said Housing Minister Brandon Lewis.

“This funding will play an important part in getting work underway which will lead to new homes and more security for aspiring homeowners.”

The government has also earmarked a further eight potential housing zones which, together with the current allocated zones, have the potential to deliver 45,000 new homes.
