New stadium development could see rugby club return to London

London Irish Rugby Football Club has announced it has been in talks with a number of parties over a possible return to the capital.

The club is currently based in Reading at the Madejski Stadium, which it shares with Reading Football Club.

Over the past decade the club has been linked with a number of possible stadium developments in London as it looks to return to its roots.

London Irish confirmed that numerous discussions have taken place with a variety of other London clubs over the last five years with a view to a ground share or joint stadium development.

Brentford Football Club has been earmarked as one such possibility as it is currently in the middle of developing a new 20,000-seat stadium in west London.

That development is also set to see around 900 homes built on an under-utilised brownfield site with its old stadium being transformed into a series of family homes.

London Irish confirmed that it has now begun formal discussions with the London Borough of Hounslow to explore the possibility of playing rugby at the new stadium.

The club, which has played at the Madejski Stadium since 2000, concluded by saying it would be reviewing all options and would keep supporters and stakeholders informed.
