Almost three-quarters of applications to Building Safety Fund rejected

Just over one-quarter of all applications to the Building Safety Fund (BSF) have been approved, according to the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC).

Of the 3,611 applications that the fund has received since first opening in June 2020, 968 have been approved, comprising 802 eligible private sector buildings and 166 eligible social sector buildings.

This means that just 26.8% of the total applications have been successful, with 443 buildings having started remediation work.

Some 185 buildings have completed works.

As of 30th September 2023, 2,534 registered private sector residential buildings and 109 registered social sector residential buildings were deemed ineligible, withdrawn, or under review.

Four social sector registered buildings had “insufficient evidence”, according to the DLUHC.

The fund was first opened to applications between June and July 2020 and was reopened to new applications in July 2022.

The BSF, which was introduced to remediate unsafe cladding on residential buildings of 18m or taller, has been allocated a budget of £4.5bn.

So far, just under £2.2bn has been approved by the fund for remediation of unsafe non-ACM cladding.
